new family site i finally decided that keeping two journals updated for the kiddos didn't really make sense anymore. the posting isn't as frequent as it was when they were babies, and so many of the things i write about involve both of them now... so i created a new site where i can write about the whole family. http://tanguayfamily.blogspot.com enjoy! (i'll still keep backed-up copies of every entry written involving each kiddo in their own separate files, and someday i'll have the whole collection printed and bound for them. they're going to have some hefty reading when the time comes!)

slowly, but surely sophie is definitely starting to get better. finally. monday night she slept straight through for the first time since she'd been sick (every other night had her up with a fever spike or throwing up - usually both - at least once. on bad nights, it was every couple of hours) and that was a nice rest for everyone. she woke up with much more energy yesterday morning and was even up playing on the floor with ben a little bit. she's started eating again, too. she tires easily and still spent a good part of the day on the couch, but she was so much more like herself. this morning, i had intended on keeping her home from school - hoping she'd be feeling well enough to by friday. but sophie asked to go. she was up and about with more energy than yesterday, so i agreed that she could try it. i made sure she knew that i would come get her if she wasn't feeling well enough to stay, but she made it through the three hours happily. ms. laurie said she was a little sluggish and preferred to stay sitting at the tables most of the time, but she told her she was glad she came. she had even planned to try going to ballet class this afternoon, but that proved a little too much. she fell asleep soon after lunch and woke up right about the time she would have needed to get ready for dance... but she was still tired and said she would rather sleep some more. that was fine with me - there's no reason for her to push herself. hopefully the extra rest this afternoon will have her feeling even better tomorrow. it's SO great to see her getting back to normal!

a new course... the weekend didn't bring the kind of improvement we'd hoped for. in fact, sophie didn't seem to be getting better at all. by yesterday evening, more than half way through her antibiotics, we were getting pretty worried that she was still so sick. she had no energy whatsoever, no sense of humor, and just wasn't acting like herself at all. her breathing was still very rapid and she was really uncomfortable. we put a call into the on-call doctor, who happened to be sophie's own pediatrician, and adam talked with her for ten minutes or so last night. she assured us that sophie wasn't showing any signs that warranted an emergency room trip, but that it did sound like she needed to be seen in the office again. so i called and made an appointment this morning and brought her back in. dr. brooks listened to her lungs and immediately said that it didn't sound like she was moving air very well, particularly in the lower part of her lungs where the pneumonia is. she decided to give her a nebulizer breathing treatment there in the office to see if that helped. sophie did very well, listening to the doctor and doing just what she asked. after the one treatment, dr. brooks said she could already hear a difference, so she wrote a prescription for more of the nebulizer medicine and sent us home with our own machine. she also checked sophie's oxygen saturation, which was hovering between 93-94% - lower than normal, and also prescribed her a steroid to help clear her lungs. the doctor also mentioned that the pneumonia is likely viral, not bacterial, and that's why we didn't see improvement after starting the antibiotics like we'd expected. because the rest of the virus seems to have run it's course, hopefully treating the symptoms of the pneumonia with the new medicines will help clear her lungs up and she should be feeling much better in a few more days. it's so hard seeing her so miserable. i hate it. but i feel good that we're taking a new approach with her treatment and really hope that we'll see her acting more like herself again soon.

what a winter! our family has had the worst run of luck with illness this season. sophie and i kicked things off with what we're pretty sure was n1h1 flu, then ben got his first and second ear infections, along with the usual smattering of sniffles and runny noses for everyone. and now sophie and i have both just suffered through another nasty virus that was likely the seasonal flu - for me it resulted in a sinus infection and ear infection, but for poor sophie it turned into pneumonia. yup, that's right, our sweet little girl spend the morning in the doctor's office and getting chest x-rays and has been diagnosed with pneumonia. she has been miserable since monday afternoon, and yesterday i started realizing there was something more serious going on when her cough started sounding different and she was in a whole new pain, to the point where she couldn't move herself and would cry out if anyone had to pick her up. now she's home and resting, with antibiotics and prescription anti-nausea medicine (so she'll keep the antibiotics down), and is finally sleeping on the couch. oh - and to make things even better, this was school vacation week. in all reality, it was probably better for her to be sick when she didn't have to miss school and ballet and all of that, but at the same time - what a bummer for her! i'd had all kinds of fun plans in mind, play dates made, and such - but she's spent the entire week stuck on the couch. i promised we'd do something really fun when she's finally feeling better - and hopefully that will be soon!

5 year check-up sophie had her annual doctor's appointment this afternoon. she did a great job and i was proud of how polite she was with everyone. she now weighs 48 pounds and is 46 inches tall - that puts her in the 90th percentile for weight and the 95th percentile for height. the doctor assured us that she is nice and healthy and very smart. of course, this was no surprise - we know all of that already! she did need five shots, though, to prepare her for kindergarten. poor girl wasn't expecting that many, but honestly i think she was a little excited to prove her bravery. she has always done really well with shots, and it was no different this time. she even watched as the nurse administered them all. she's tougher than me, that's for sure! (afterward i told her the story about when i had to sign up for kindergarten - which was basically me jumping up, running out the door, and down a flight of stairs before they could catch me to give me the shots... sophie thought that was pretty hilarious.) and now, with the shots out of the way, sophie is all set for kindergarten registration!

a funny the other day, sophie was talking about what she wanted to be when she grows up. she told me she couldn't decide between a singer, a chef, or a surgeon. i assured her that she had plenty of time to decide, and that for now she could just practice the things she likes and when she's older she'll be better prepared to make a choice. she thought about that for a minute and then said, "yeah, but you really shouldn't practice being a surgeon." she's got me there.

day of birthday parties yesterday was full of birthday celebration for sophie. we had her friend party in the morning. counting ben and sophie, there were 11 kiddos for the party (plus tara who was a great helper). nearly everyone we invited could come, so i was a little worried it would be too much in our small space, but everyone was great and they all had a fun time. we did one simple craft where the kids decorated foam picture frames, and then i printed a picture for each one of them to bring home in it. i did a collage one for sophie's frame, since i never did manage to get a shot of all the girls together. here is sophie with all of the guests but one (the little sister from next door didn't want her picture taken)... everyone was pretty exhausted by bedtime, but it was a fun day. we are all going to spend today in our pjs exploring the new toys and relaxing. sophie has SO much new stuff now - it's definitely time to weed through the playroom again!

happy birthday! we were also lucky to have adam home with us for the day - he'd had to work saturday, so took today off in exchange. we started the morning with some presents. she chose to open ben's first (an assortment of target $1 bin items, as has become our tradition for their gifts to each other) and then we ate breakfast. next up was a trip to chuck e. cheese. the kids both had a ball. we headed home for lunch, opened the last couple presents, then had a nice relaxing afternoon watching a new movie and played with some new toys. for dinner, sophie chose pizza from merrill's. we brought it home and had a picnic dinner together in the living room. sophie had a really great day, and she's so proud to be five. she keeps talking about how she gets to start kindergarten in the fall because she's five now. and she's very much looking forward to her parties on saturday, both with friends and with family.

Dear Princess Sophia, In less then two hours you will be five years old. It does not seem like so much time has passed since that wonderful day when I first laid eyes on my beautiful princess. At the same time, I think back to all of the wonderful moments we have shared and I can't believe they all fit within such a short span of time. You have truly blessed us with your spirit and love. I am thankful for every day that I have to spend with you, and hope that never a day will go by when I don't see your beautiful smile and hear your beautiful voice. Five years ago you made me a Daddy, and so helped make me into who I am today. I want to be the best Daddy I can be for you and your brother, and feel so blessed to have you as my daughter. I love you so much. Love always, Daddy.
dear sophia, i can't believe that this is the sixth year i'm sitting down to write one of these letters to you on the night before your birthday. i can remember so clearly writing the very first one before you were born. its amazing to me that time has passed so quickly and we now have a smart, spirited nearly-five-year-old living in our house and fitting so perfectly into our lives. you are as strong-willed as ever, but still incredibly sweet. the occasions when you have talked back to us or shown a poor attitude have been overshadowed time and time again by the loving notes you constantly write, the extra snuggles at bedtime, the care you show for your brother, the silly jokes you tell, and the excitement that shines from you whenever you are having fun. you bring such incredible joy into our lives every single day. i love you. mama

Christmas fun It is currently two days after Christmas, and we are in our second day of staying home in our PJs all day and playing. This has been a really fun holiday season so far. On Christmas Eve we opened up a few presents in the morning, had an early lunch/nap (for Ben), and then had a nice visit with my parents. After that we had dinner at Aimee's mom's house. The kids were extremely high energy (shocker), but were not too bad. We got home late, and got them right up to bed to get some sleep before Santa came. Aimee and I were awake very early. We had a busy day planned so we got up and showered before the kids woke up. After getting the kids up and seeing what Santa brought, we finished opening gifts and left for breakfast at Aimee's mom's and finished opening presents there. Breakfast was delicious. Thank you, Nanner, for the quiche. After breakfast, we packed the kids back in the car and drove to Aimee's dad's house for more fun, presents, and dinner. We had an awful lot of fun visiting with everyone. The kids really enjoyed playing with their cousin Rigel. After dinner, we said farewell to everyone and headed home. We got home past bedtime, but decided to let the kids stay up for one Christmas movie (Frosty) while they played with some of their new toys. Since we were so busy the previous two days, we decided to spend the rest of the weekend at home just relaxing and playing together. It has been really fun so far with surprisingly few arguments between the kids. Yesterday we played with Ben's Geotrax, tried out our two new Wii games, and played Twister. The kids spent some time hiding in the closet with a cool glow in the dark drawing station Ben got from Nana. Sophia made herself and Benjamin some cupcakes for breakfast with her new cupcake maker, and then for a snack later in the day she made us some sugar cookies with her new Easy Bake Oven. Today it has been back to Geotrax and the Wii games (especially the new racing game). Sophia is proving to be quite the fashion designer using a toy from Grandpa and Gigi. The next project Sophie wants to tackle is making some new bead jewelry. Hopefully tempers stay under control and we can have a fun afternoon as well.

the polar express sophie had a great time. she was a little shy with santa and the conductor, but she answered all of their questions. she even jumped up at the beginning with tara when the conductor asked for "assistant conductors" to volunteer to help begin the journey. the entire experience was pretty magical, and she couldn't wait to bring her special bell to school the next day to show her teacher and all her friends.

loving christmastime sophie is so excited about christmas this year. she's always loved it, of course, but it seems each year it gets better and better. she's been so thoughtful about choosing and making christmas gifts, and she can't wait to give them. she's also in school this year (she didn't start last year until january), so that's certainly adding to the anticipation as they learn new holiday songs and plan for their christmas party. we've started our advent calendar, too. the kids take turns each day, and in each pocket is either a little treat, like a chocolate coin or tiny toy, or a note about an activity that we'll do that day, like taking a drive to see christmas lights. sophie's school is also putting on a little christmas performance for all of the parents. it's just a short show with some songs that the kids have learned and a little reception with snacks afterward, but the teacher reserved space at the town hall for the event and the kids are awfully excited about it. sophie has even been given a little "solo" part with two other girls from her class. she's been practicing and practicing and can't wait for us to see it. i love this time of year, and its so much more magical with kids to share it with!

happy thanksgiving we spent our evening at home, putting up the tree and some other christmas decorations. the kiddos had been looking forward to this part of the day, and they were both really helpful. ben did much better with the ornaments this year and didn't need much help hanging them. he got a little impatient a couple of times, but overall he did really well. it was a nice way to relax and spend time together after a day out. we have so much to be thankful for - a warm home, a loving family, and time to spend together... what more could we ask for?

sweet sister yesterday was ben's birthday. sophie has been so excited to help me plan the party and couldn't wait to buy him a present. i decided to give her $5 and take her to target to look through the $1.00 section. i explained that she could choose up to five things. she looked through everything very carefully and picked five little gifts - a package of chocolate coins, some cars markers, a wooden construction vehicle, a little shopping basket filled with pretend vegetables for their kitchen, and a photo frame cube. the frame was the sweetest gift - she wanted to fill it with pictures of her and ben together. she looked through pictures on the computer with me and chose the six she wanted to use. we printed them up and i helped her put them in the frame. it was such a thoughtful, meaningful gift - and ben loved it. she also spent all week long making birthday cards for him; i think i counted 17 when she finally gave them all to him this morning. she loves her brother so much, and he loves her right back!

finally better our poor girl had a pretty rough time last week - she went from sunday until thursday just sleeping and resting on the couch all day long, and didn't eat that entire time. finally on thursday morning she asked for a grilled cheese sandwich for breakfast, which i happily made her, and she ate one for lunch and dinner, too. by friday she was much more like herself, although still napping throughout the day and seeming a little off. by the weekend she had pretty much recovered, and even spent a good part of sunday running and playing outside. she lost a few pounds over the week and it took her a few days to regain all of her energy, but she's doing great now. she was so excited to head back to school this morning, after having spent all last week house-bound. her teachers were excited to have her back, too. ms. laurie even called last friday to check on her, and commented about how much the teachers had missed her and what a good influence she was on the other kiddos. that was a nice thing to hear. now let's hope we can all stay nice and healthy for the rest of the season!

soccer pictures i almost forgot... we got sophie's soccer pictures back on saturday, too...

sick girl poor sophie has been awfully sick for the past few days. i was battling something at the end of last week, which eventually felt very much like the flu. adam helped out SO much and i stayed away from the kids as much as possible, but sophie started feeling bad on sunday morning. i'm thankful that she made it through halloween just fine, because she would have been terribly disappointed to have missed out. at first, she just seemed extra tired on sunday morning, which we thought might just have been from being up late on halloween and all of the excitement of the day... but then she started running a fever and was feeling really miserable. by monday morning, her fever was up to nearly 104 between medicine doses, she'd thrown up a few times, and she was really out of sorts. we did take her in to the doctor's office, mainly to find out if it was one of the strains of flu so we would know when it comes time to get flu shots if she even needs them... no point giving her a shot for something she's already had. the doctor said that she didn't have "the flu" but instead had a flu-like virus (which, in the end, is essentially the same thing as far as treatment goes). we need to watch her for breathing difficulties and dehydration, but other than that she just needs to rest and let it run its course. she hasn't really eaten since saturday, with the exception of some yogurt and a popsicle yesterday (which she threw up anyhow), but she is sipping water consistently. she does seem slightly better than yesterday, but she's still really miserable. she hasn't really been off the couch since sunday morning, and i don't think she will be today either. here's to hoping it doesn't last much longer!
halloween! we had a pretty hectic halloween, but it was a ton of fun. it actually started the night before when we went with our neighbor and her daughters to the local elementary school for a "halloween stroll" of trick-or-treating through the gym at different decorated stations with parents and kids in full costumes handing out the candy. it was really cute and the kids loved seeing all the other children dressed up. sophie even ran into a few friends from preschool, as well as her teacher who was there passing out candy. it was a really nice way to kick off our halloween. halloween morning we had sophie's soccer games, then we went back home to change and do a little visiting with the grandparents. we went to grammy's first, then nana's, then great grammy's... then we even made an unscheduled stop in portland to visit brianna at work. everyone had wonderful treats for the kiddos, and they were so excited to show off their costumes to everyone. by the time we got home, it was nearly time to head out into the neighborhood. we picked up a little bit, emptied out the treat bags, and let the kids rest for a short while - then the neighbors stopped by to see if we wanted to head out with them. we only stayed out for five or six houses, but that was plenty. the kids really wanted to get back to pass candy out to people at our house. unfortunately there was some rain in the evening and we didn't get a ton of people, but they still enjoyed the ones that did come.
last day of soccer sophie had her final day of the soccer season on saturday. the peewee league consists of weekly practices, a few scrimmages, and ends with each team playing two games on the last day. sophie's black team faced off against the red team and the lime green team - and both times she did great! she got right out there and played intently - which was such a big change from last year, when i think at one point she was actually sitting on the field playing with some grass, haha. she even scored two goals! i was so proud of her and had such fun watching her out there.

halloween party sophie had a little halloween party at school today. the kiddos were invited to wear their costumes, but sophie's was a little difficult for her to get on and off by herself and i thought that might pose a problem for her at school - so she decided to choose something different from her box of dress up costumes. she picked a doctor. we had everything, including all of the accessories, except pants - so for about $1.00's worth of fabric i made her some and we had an entire second costume ready to go! my favorite part of the whole thing, though? while ben was taking his afternoon nap, sophie asked me if she could make a craft project for him - a card and a little paper bowl to put one of her pieces of candy in for him to have when he woke up. she is just so thoughtful and willing to share with her brother.
