sophie's world |
...a chronicle of our pregnancy and new daughter |
2.22.2010
a new course... the weekend didn't bring the kind of improvement we'd hoped for. in fact, sophie didn't seem to be getting better at all. by yesterday evening, more than half way through her antibiotics, we were getting pretty worried that she was still so sick. she had no energy whatsoever, no sense of humor, and just wasn't acting like herself at all. her breathing was still very rapid and she was really uncomfortable. we put a call into the on-call doctor, who happened to be sophie's own pediatrician, and adam talked with her for ten minutes or so last night. she assured us that sophie wasn't showing any signs that warranted an emergency room trip, but that it did sound like she needed to be seen in the office again. so i called and made an appointment this morning and brought her back in. dr. brooks listened to her lungs and immediately said that it didn't sound like she was moving air very well, particularly in the lower part of her lungs where the pneumonia is. she decided to give her a nebulizer breathing treatment there in the office to see if that helped. sophie did very well, listening to the doctor and doing just what she asked. after the one treatment, dr. brooks said she could already hear a difference, so she wrote a prescription for more of the nebulizer medicine and sent us home with our own machine. she also checked sophie's oxygen saturation, which was hovering between 93-94% - lower than normal, and also prescribed her a steroid to help clear her lungs. the doctor also mentioned that the pneumonia is likely viral, not bacterial, and that's why we didn't see improvement after starting the antibiotics like we'd expected. because the rest of the virus seems to have run it's course, hopefully treating the symptoms of the pneumonia with the new medicines will help clear her lungs up and she should be feeling much better in a few more days. it's so hard seeing her so miserable. i hate it. but i feel good that we're taking a new approach with her treatment and really hope that we'll see her acting more like herself again soon.
