the polar express

yesterday evening we took a trip into portland with my mom and sisters to the narrow gauge railroad to take a ride on the "polar express." it was a really great program, run in part with the children's theater of maine, where actors join in the fun and lead a dramatic reading of the story. we had two pajama-clad kids on our car who narrated the story, we made a stop to let on "waiters" who served hot chocolate and cookies, and when we got to the "north pole" santa climbed on and greeted each child. during the ride, the conductor made the rounds and punched each child's special golden ticket. at the end, each child was given a bell to bring home with them.

sophie had a great time. she was a little shy with santa and the conductor, but she answered all of their questions. she even jumped up at the beginning with tara when the conductor asked for "assistant conductors" to volunteer to help begin the journey. the entire experience was pretty magical, and she couldn't wait to bring her special bell to school the next day to show her teacher and all her friends.
